As the name implies, marble is present but it forms only a minor part of the bedrock, which is mostly schist. The peak is named in honour of Sir Anthony Musgrave, a colonial governor of Newfoundland.
The Marble Mountains Wilderness is a prime example of a wild and scenic place in California. It is far removed from the hustle and bustle of major cities, but remains an undeveloped expanse of land. Originally set aside as a Forest Service Primitive Area in the 1930s, the area was included in the original class of wilderness areas created by the Wilderness Preservation Act of 1964. Its 241,744 acres are home to abundant wildlife.
Marble Mountain is named after a fairy who flew from a dragon's egg, leaving the shell behind to grow into five mystical mountains. Minh Mang, the second king of the Nguyen Dynasty, named the mountains after five essential elements of Eastern culture. While the story is quite mythical, the Vietnamese government has maintained the name as part of their tourism marketing strategy, ensuring the Marble Mountains remain a popular destination in Da Nang.
During the Cham Dynasty, the Marble Mountains served as a pilgrimage site. Vietnamese King Minh Mang called them Ngu Hanh Son, which translates to "Five Elements Mountain". It is also a sacred place for Mahayana Buddhists and Vietnamese aristocracy. In the colonial period, French geologists changed the name to Marble Mountain, pointing out that the rocks are rich in marble. In the early 20th century, the Marble Mountains were also a base for Vietnamese guerillas during the Vietnam/American war. At the time, the Vietnamese government banned mining of the marble and its exploitation for sculpting purposes. Today, it is illegal to quarry the marble from Marble Mountain.
Marble Mountain is easily accessible from Da Nang or Hoi An and is an ideal destination for a day trip. The best time to visit the Marble Mountains is early in the morning. If you wish to explore the area independently, you can do so by crossing the Han River bridge. Once you reach the Marble Mountains, you can explore the rocky cliffs for less than three hours.
